I.S.A.R. Germany is a nonprofit aid organization that provides disaster response worldwide. Its focus is on search and rescue operations in urban environments (Urban Search and Rescue, USAR) as well as emergency medical care and emergency aid in crisis areas. With a staff of about 120, the organization provides assistance to people in the wake of natural disasters and major emergencies. MEDUVENT Standard is also used regularly in these situations.

I.S.A.R. Germany – volunteer disaster response worldwide

Founded in 2003, the aid organization operates both in Germany and internationally. I.S.A.R. teams are deployed on international missions to areas affected by earthquakes or floods – for example, following the severe earthquake in Turkey in 2023, where the focus was primarily on “urban search and rescue” and humanitarian aid. As part of the national disaster response effort, I.S.A.R. provided support, among other things, following the 2021 flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. The international team was deployed to search for missing persons, locate them, assess damage, and carry out cleanup operations.

One notable feature is the organization’s high level of flexibility: many of the responders, most of whom are volunteers, bring expertise from their day jobs and take on multiple roles within the teams. “For example, a SAR team that has been called in can quickly transition to being an emergency medical team while still on the scene, without having to bring in a significant number of additional personnel”, says Stefan Becker, Medical Team Leader at I.S.A.R. Germany. Both the medical team and the search and rescue unit are certified according to international standards set by the WHO and INSARAG, respectively.

Medical technology for use in extreme conditions

The medical teams from I.S.A.R. Germany are often deployed to areas where medical infrastructure is scarce or no longer functioning. Their daily routine also includes, at times, extreme environmental conditions such as dust, high humidity, heat, double-digit sub-zero temperatures, as well as challenging air transport or missions in collapsed buildings.  Due to these adverse operating conditions, the demands placed on the medical technology used at I.S.A.R. are correspondingly high. Ventilators, for example, must reliably handle both acute emergency situations and long-term ventilation – often without a continuous oxygen supply.

MEDUVENT Standard supports life-saving missions worldwide

For its challenging missions, I.S.A.R. relies on MEDUVENT Standard and uses this compact device both in its UN-certified Urban Search and Rescue Team and in its WHO-certified Emergency Medical Team. “What we particularly appreciate about MEDUVENT Standard is its ease and speed of use, its light weight, and its compact size. The straightforward connection of the oxygen supply – which requires no special connection systems – also offers significant advantages, particularly during international operations”, says Stefan Becker. “The clear display of ventilation parameters also allows for quick adjustment to different patient situations.”

Looking to the future, I.S.A.R. Germany views modern, innovative medical technology as a key factor in the success of international disaster response efforts. Lightweight, robust, and high-performance systems are essential for making quick, precise, and ultimately life-saving decisions – no matter how remote or underdeveloped the infrastructure in an operational area may be.
