Our CCSV Webinar with Dr. Patrick van der Geest

On April 29, 2026, we held our webinar titled “Conventional vs. Mechanical Ventilation in Cardiac Arrest”, which provided participants with valuable insights into the latest scientific developments as well as practical experiences from the emergency medical services. Dr. Patrick van der Geest, intensive care physician and medical director of the intensive care unit at Spaarne Gasthuis in Haarlem (Netherlands). He shared his perspective on CCSV and provided insights into his ongoing CCSV study.
Insights into the research and clinical application of CCSV

At the beginning of his presentation, Dr. van der Geest gave an introduction to the CCSV (Chest Compression Synchronized Ventilation) ventilation mode, which was developed specifically for use during resuscitation. In addition to explaining how it works, he outlined the clinical benefits of CCSV and highlighted the potential of this mode for more effective resuscitation in the prehospital setting. His presentation also covered the latest developments in international resuscitation research as well as the current ERC guidelines. In particular, he discussed how to perform high-quality CPR in accordance with the latest guidelines.
Firsthand research: study of ventilation during resuscitation
The central focus of the presentation was the introduction of his ongoing study on synchronized ventilation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. During the presentation, Dr. van der Geest outlined the study protocol and shared initial insights from the practical implementation. His strong personal interest in medical research is a key motivator for conducting this study.
In addition to the scientific findings, he also addressed the challenges that can arise when conducting clinical trials and introducing new technologies in emergency medical services. “Implementing innovative methods into existing processes, in particular, requires not only evidence but also organizational and structural adjustments,” he explained.
We are delighted to have such a knowledgeable partner in the field of CCSV research in Dr. Patrick van der Geest and the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Emergency Medical Services, and we eagerly await the results of the ongoing study.

An exchange among equals
Following the presentation, the enthusiastic audience took the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences. The open discussion with an experienced CCSV user received a lot of positive feedback. The webinar provided a successful blend of academic input, practical insights, and interactive discussion. It underscored once again the importance of evidence-based innovations such as CCSV for the advancement of emergency medicine.
We would like to thank Dr. Patrick van der Geest for his engaging presentation, as well as all participants for their keen interest and lively discussion, and we look forward to our next webinar.
