Our Webinar “NIV in Emergency Medical Services” with PD Dr. med. Maximilian Kippnich

24/06/2026 Fairs & Events

On June 17, 2026, we held our webinar on the topic “NIV in Emergency Medical Services – Early Stabilization. Better Outcomes. Greater Safety in Use.” with PD Dr. med. Maximilian Kippnich. It provided the more than 500 interested participants with a wealth of expert knowledge and practical insights into the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in prehospital care.

The speaker, PD Dr. med. Maximilian Kippnich, is a senior physician in the Department of Anesthesiology at University Hospital Würzburg, a board-certified specialist in anesthesiology, intensive care, emergency medicine, and medical quality management, as well as an experienced emergency physician in ground and air rescue services. In addition to the expert input from Dr. Kippnich, the participants then had the opportunity to ask questions. During the event, participants exchanged and discussed real-life mission scenarios, typical challenges, and specific implementation tips for everyday emergency medical services.

From case study to practical application

Dr. Kippnich began his 30-minute presentation with a vivid case study from the day-to-day work of emergency medical services. Building on this, he reviewed the available options for oxygen administration and ventilation in the prehospital setting. In respiratory emergencies, these measures are often crucial for the early stabilization of patients. He also explained the key principles of NIV and discussed relevant indications.

Equally important was an assessment of the limitations and contraindications of NIV, such as absence of spontaneous breathing, airway obstruction, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, or hemodynamic instability. There was a particular focus on practical procedures in real-life situations. Dr. Kippnich made it clear that successful NIV depends not only on device settings, but above all on a patient-centered approach. “Ventilation must always be tailored to the patient – not the other way around.”

Non-invasive ventilation with MEDUVENT Standard

Dr. Kippnich went on to explain which settings are relevant for NIV ventilation with MEDUVENT Standard. Among other features, the ventilator offers CPAP as well as – depending on the configuration – ASB and other pressure-controlled ventilation modes. In addition, MEDUVENT Standard displays pressure and flow curves for easy monitoring. In emergency medical services in particular, it is not only the device’s technical capabilities that are important, but also its safe use in a wide variety of operational conditions.

Valuable exchange between speaker and webinar participants

Following the presentation, many participants took the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences from their day-to-day work in emergency medical services. The open discussion with a highly experienced NIV user received a great deal of positive feedback. The webinar provided a successful blend of theoretical input, practical insights, and interactive discussion.

We would like to thank Dr. Kippnich for his fascinating presentation and all the participants for their keen interest and lively discussion.
