Mountain Rescue with MEDUVENT Standard | TOPR

Łukasz Migiel, mountain rescuer and paramedic at TOPR, gave us an insight into his daily work and the challenges of mountain rescue. As a paramedic in the rescue helicopter crew of the TOPR emergency medical service, he provides medical assistance in challenging environments.

Mountain rescue differs greatly from ground rescue, mainly due to the use of helicopters and the technical requirements such as wall, avalanche and cave rescue. This work is very challenging, both physically and mentally.

One of the biggest hurdles is getting to the site in difficult weather conditions. Sometimes it is impossible to get to the victims in time to ensure their chances of survival.

TOPR has been using WEINMANN ventilators for several years, including the MEDUVENT Standard model. This device makes manual ventilation easier for rescuers and is particularly important when evacuating intubated patients by helicopter. It can also work without bottled oxygen, which is an advantage in extreme situations in the mountains. It is small and lightweight.

Łukasz particularly appreciates the simple operation of the MEDUVENT Standard, the quick commissioning and the automatic parameter selection. These functions are crucial for efficiency and safety during rescue operations in the mountains. He particularly emphasizes the reliability of the ventilator.

Use of the MEDUVENT Standard in an emergency situation

In an emergency situation in which a patient suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, Łukasz and his team were able to restore the patient’s vital functions at the scene of the accident. The patient was intubated and ventilated with a self-expanding bag. Due to the dense forest, the patient and paramedics had to leave the scene using a stretcher, which was connected to the helicopter hovering 50 meters above via a rescue hoist. The patient was ventilated in SIMV mode, which left Łukasz's hands free for transportation and further treatment in the helicopter. The patient survived and was discharged from hospital without neurological deficits.

Challenges of the difficult terrain in the Tatras

The difficult terrain in the Tatras poses particular challenges in terms of the reliability and weight of the medical equipment. There are no ventilators specifically designed for mountain rescue, so the team must constantly research the medical market and select suitable equipment. MEDUVENT Standard has proven to be a reliable device and is a suitable solution for mountain rescue for TOPR.
